Construction Management Firm Ajax Building Corp. Joins STO Building Group

Structure Tone and Ajax Building Corporation announced that the Florida-based construction management firm will join the Structure Tone family of companies, expanding Structure Tone’s geographic reach into the US Southeast and giving Ajax access to Structure Tone’s global network and resources.

“Ajax Building Corporation is a leader in one of the fastest-growing markets in the US,” says Structure Tone CEO Robert Mullen. “By joining forces, both of our firms are now able to enhance and expand each other’s businesses, clients and service offerings into new areas.”

Founded in 1958, Ajax Building Corporation has steadily built a reputation as a construction management leader in the US Southeast. With over 200 employees in locations across Florida and Georgia, as well as operations in South Carolina, the firm works on a diverse mix of both ground-up and interior construction projects across such sectors as higher and K-12 education, city, county and state government, healthcare and historic restoration. Some of the firm’s signature projects include Florida State University’s Chemical Sciences building, the Sarasota County Emergency Operations Center, the Okaloosa County Courthouse and USF Health’s Morsani Ambulatory Surgery Center. The firm has also rebuilt numerous schools and public service buildings, including Charlotte High School and Punta Gorda Middle School, which were destroyed by Hurricane Charley.

“Ajax has become one of the fastest-growing construction firms in the Southeast, and we would like to continue to foster that kind of growth in a sustainable way,” says Bill Byrne, president of Ajax Building Corporation. “This opportunity to partner with a firm that shares a similar culture, values and client-focused approach was an ideal way to do just that while providing more opportunities for our employees.”

Last year Structure Tone restructured its ownership model to extend company ownership to all employees and a small group of outside investors. In January 2018, Canadian interior construction management firm Govan Brown joined the Structure Tone organization as the first merger following that ownership transition.

“This addition of Ajax is a continuation of Structure Tone’s mission to expand construction services to our growing global client base while remaining committed to our core values, which has made us one of the top construction management firms in the business,” says Structure Tone executive chairman James Donaghy. “It also opens up new avenues for employees from both firms to grow and develop their careers.”

Ajax Building Corporation will retain its name, and its current leaders—Bill Byrne and Jay Smith—will retain ownership in the company and maintain their roles as the senior leadership team of the business. No personnel changes are expected for either company.
